Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)

What is KAP

Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) is an innovative treatment combining the powerful effects of ketamine with guided therapeutic support. Originally developed as an anesthetic, ketamine has gained recognition for its rapid antidepressant effects, particularly in individuals with treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, and PTSD.

Treatment Steps

  1. Initial Consultation:

    • The process begins with a comprehensive evaluation with Dr. Scott-Ward and an additional medical provider (a psychiatrist or nurse practitioner) where your mental health history, treatment goals, and any previous therapeutic experiences are reviewed. This helps us determine if KAP is suitable for you.

  2. Pre-Treatment Preparation:

    • During this session, we will establish your intentions for therapy, outline what to expect during the ketamine sessions, provide new skills and routines to manage difficult experiences and emotions and address any questions or concerns. This preparation is crucial for setting a safe and supportive framework.

  3. Ketamine Administration:

    • On the day of treatment, you will receive a carefully calculated dose of ketamine, administered either via sublingual lozenge, intramuscular injection or via intravenous infusion, in a comfortable and controlled environment. There will be music and - if desired - aromatherapy or sound-vibration therapy to enhance the experience. Dr. Scott-Ward will be present throughout the session to provide support.

  4. Therapeutic Experience:

    • As the ketamine takes effect, you may enter an altered state of consciousness. This can facilitate introspection and emotional exploration. Dr. Scott-Ward will support your unique experience, and if needed help you navigate any feelings or insights that arise.

  5. Post-Session Integration:

    • After the ketamine experience, we will engage in a reflective discussion to process insights and emotions that emerged during the session through the lens of your initial intentions for the experience. This integration is key for meaning making and translating the experience into actionable change in your daily life.

  6. Follow-Up Sessions:

    • Depending on your needs, we may schedule additional KAP sessions. Ongoing therapy will focus on continued integration and exploration of any themes that arise, ensuring sustained progress and emotional well-being.

  7. Long-Term Support:

    • Beyond the KAP sessions, we will collaborate on a long-term mental health plan tailored to your needs, which may include traditional psychotherapy, mindfulness practices, or other therapeutic modalities to support your ongoing journey.

Research has shown that KAP can lead to significant improvements in mood, emotional regulation, and overall well-being, offering a novel pathway for those seeking relief from psychological distress, insight into life, and making steps for the future.
